Welcome to your JLPT N3 reading guide! At the N3 level, reading shifts from simple, factual sentences to narratives—stories that express time progression, character emotions, and subtle plot twists.

To master N3 narratives, you must learn to track chronological order and recognize clue-bearing grammar patterns.

1. Key Grammar in N3 Narratives

Narratives rely heavily on grammar that connects events in time or shows a sudden change in situation.

A. ～うちに (While... / Before...)

This pattern indicates doing an action while a certain state exists, or before that state changes.

• Form: Verb (Dictionary/Te-form/Nai-form) + うちに | N + のうちに | i-Adj + うちに
• Example:
  明るいうちに、森を抜け出さなければならない。
  Translation: We must escape the forest while it is still light.明森抜出

B. ～たところ (When... [I discovered that])

Used when you do something, and as a direct result, you discover or experience something new.

• Form: Verb (Ta-form) + ところ
• Example:
  窓を開けたところ、美しい小鳥が飛び込んできた。
  Translation: When I opened the window, [to my surprise] a beautiful bird flew in.窓開美小鳥飛
