Daily Abstract Kanji (Main Guide)
Master N3 Japanese: Daily Abstract Kanji
Welcome to your N3 Kanji masterclass. At the JLPT N3 level, you transition from concrete nouns (like 車 car or 川 river) to abstract concepts that form the backbone of daily Japanese conversation, news, and media.
Today, we will master three essential abstract kanji: 感 (feeling), 法 (method/law), and 度 (degree/frequency).
1. 感 (かん) — Feeling, Sensation, Emotion
This kanji combines the phonetic/semantic component 咸 (all/together) with 心 (heart/mind) at the bottom. Think of it as "what your heart feels when everything comes together."
- Onyomi (Chinese reading): カン (Kan)
- Kunyomi (Japanese reading): (Rarely used alone as a verb: 感じる kan-jiru - to feel)
Key Vocabulary & Suffix Usage
感 is incredibly productive as a suffix meaning "a sense of [X]":
| Compound | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 感謝 | kansha | Gratitude / Thanks |
| 安心感 | anshinkan | A sense of security |
| 違和感 | iwakan | A feeling of dread / out-of-place sensation |
Contextual Example
最近、仕事で達成感を得ることが難しい。
Saikin, shigoto de tasseikan o eru koto ga muzukashii.
Lately, it is difficult to get a sense of achievement at work.
(Grammar Note: The particle を (o) marks "達成感" as the direct object of the verb 得る (eru - to obtain).
2. 法 (ほう / ぽう) — Law, Method, Way
Structurally, this kanji consists of the water radical (氵) on the left and 去 (to go/depart) on the right. Historically, it represented water flowing naturally—the "natural law."
- Onyomi: ホウ (Hō), ポウ (Pō - in compounds like 文法 bunpō)
- Kunyomi: (Not commonly used alone)
Key Vocabulary & Suffix Usage
When attached to a noun or the stem of a verb, 〜法 means "how to [do X]" or "system of [X]":
| Compound | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 方法 | hōhō | Method / Way of doing |
| 文法 | bunpō | Grammar (lit. sentence laws) |
| 解決法 | kaiketsuhō | Solution / Way to resolve |
Contextual Example

Kono mondai no kaiketsuhō o oshiete kudasai.
Please tell me the way to solve this problem.
3. 度 (ど / たび) — Degree, Frequency, Attitude
This kanji depicts a hand (又) measuring under a roof (广). It relates to measurement, occurrences, and personal limits.
- Onyomi: ド (Do), ト (To)
- Kunyomi: たび (Tabi - time/occasion)
Key Vocabulary & Suffix Usage
As a suffix, 〜度 indicates the level, scale, or frequency of a state:
| Compound | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 態度 | taido | Attitude (lit. state/degree of posture) |
| 自由度 | jiyūdo | Degree of freedom |
| 今度 | kondo | This time / Next time |
Contextual Example
