2500 Core N3 Words (Main Guide)
JLPT N3 Vocabulary Mastery: Navigating the 2,500 Core Words
Welcome to your intermediate Japanese journey! Transitioning from N4 to N3 requires expanding your vocabulary from daily survival Japanese to expressing abstract ideas, nuances, and professional concepts.
To conquer the 2,500 core N3 words, rote memorization is not enough. You must understand vocabulary structurally. This guide focuses on two high-yield N3 vocabulary categories: Transitive/Intransitive Pairs and Abstract Sino-Japanese Compounds (漢語).
1. The Core Pivot: Transitive vs. Intransitive Pairs (自他動詞)
At the N3 level, examiners frequently test your ability to distinguish between transitive (action done by an agent) and intransitive (state change of an object) verbs. Mastering these pairs will instantly boost both your vocabulary and grammar scores.
Key N3 Pairs to Memorize:
- 増やす (huyasu - Transitive) vs. 増える (hueru - Intransitive) = To increase
- 残す (nokosu - Transitive) vs. 残る (nokoru - Intransitive) = To leave behind / To remain
- 片付ける (katazukeru - Transitive) vs. 片付く (katazuku - Intransitive) = To tidy up / To be tidied up
Particle Rules & Examples:
- Transitive Verb: Requires an active agent and the direct object particle を (o).
- Intransitive Verb: Focuses on the state of the subject, using the particle が (ga).
Transitive Example:
彼は貯金を増やした。
Kare wa chokin o huyashita.
He increased his savings.
Intransitive Example:
体重が5キロ増えた。
Taijuu ga go-kiro hueta.
My weight increased by 5 kilograms.
2. Structural Decoding: Sino-Japanese Suffixes (漢語接尾辞)
A massive chunk of the 2,500 N3 words consists of two-kanji compounds (漢語 - Kango). You can easily learn hundreds of words at once by mastering common N3 suffixes.
Suffix 1: 〜化 (-ka / "-ization" or "becoming")
Added to nouns to indicate a process of transformation.
- 温暖 (ondan - warm) $\rightarrow$ 温暖化 (ondanka - global warming)
- 映画 (eiga - movie) $\rightarrow$ 映画化 (eigaka - adaptation into a movie)
Suffix 2: 〜性 (-sei / "-ity" or "nature/property")
Added to nouns/adjectives to indicate quality or characteristics.
- 安全 (anzen - safe) $\rightarrow$ 安全性 (anzensei - safety/reliability)
- 可能 (kanou - possible) $\rightarrow$ 可能性 (kanousei - possibility)
Example Sentence:
この計画が成功する可能性は高い。
Kono keikaku ga seikou suru kanousei wa takai.
The possibility of this plan succeeding is high.
3. The Elite Study Strategy: Collocation Learning
Do not study N3 words in isolation. Learn them through collocations—natural word partnerships.
| Isolated N3 Word | Natural Collocation | English Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 得る (eru - to obtain) | 許可を得る (kyoka o eru) | To obtain permission |
| 抱く (idaku - to hold/harbor) | 疑問を抱く (gimon o idaku) | To harbor doubts |
| 避ける (sakeru - to avoid) | 混雑を避ける (konzatsu o sakeru) | To avoid crowds |
Quick Check: N3 Vocabulary Challenge

ドア ( を / が ) 閉まって ( いる / ある )。
Doa ( o / ga ) shimatte ( iru / aru ).
