Daily Conversations Audio (Main Guide)
N4 Masterclass: Decoding Spoken Japanese & Daily Conversations
Welcome to your N4 study guide. At the JLPT N4 level, transitioning from textbook Japanese to natural, spoken audio can feel challenging. Native speakers frequently compress words, drop particles, and use casual contractions.
This guide focuses on spoken shortcuts and conversational patterns you will hear in daily life and JLPT N4 listening sections.
1. Key Phonetic Shortcuts in Daily Audio
In everyday conversation, efficiency is key. Standard grammatical forms are often contracted. Mastering these three contractions will instantly boost your listening comprehension.
A. 〜てしまう (Regret / Completion) $\rightarrow$ 〜ちゃう / 〜じゃう
- Rule: Replace -te shimau with -chau, and -de shimau with -jau.
- Textbook: 宿題を忘れてしまいました。 (Shukudai o wasurete shimaimashita.)
- Spoken Audio: 宿題忘れちゃいました。 (Shukudai wasurechaimashita.) — I forgot my homework (regretfully).
B. 〜ておく (Doing in advance) $\rightarrow$ 〜とく
- Rule: Replace -te oku with -toku, and -de oku with -doku.
- Textbook: 切符を買っておきます。 (Kippu o katte okimasu.)
- Spoken Audio: チケット買っとくね。 (Chiketto kattoku ne.) — I'll buy the tickets in advance.
C. 〜なければならない (Must do) $\rightarrow$ 〜なきゃ / 〜なくちゃ
- Rule: Replace the formal obligation ending with -nakya or -nakucha.
- Textbook: もう帰らなければなりません。 (Mō kaeranakereba narimasen.)
- Spoken Audio: もう帰らなきゃ。 (Mō kaeranakya.) — I've got to go home now.
2. Practical Dialogue: Planning a Party
Listen to this natural conversation between two colleagues, Tanaka (A) and Sato (B). Pay attention to the dropped particles and contractions.
Dialogue
- A: 明日のパーティーの準備、もう終わった?
Ashita no pātī no junbi, mō owatta?
(Is the prep for tomorrow's party finished already?) - B: ううん、まだ。飲み物、買っとかないと。
Ūn, mada. Nomimono, kattokanai to.
(No, not yet. I have to buy the drinks beforehand.) - A: じゃあ、私が買っとくよ。何がいい?
Jaa, watashi ga kattoku yo. Nani ga ii?
(Then, I'll buy them. What would be good?) - B: 本当?助かる!ビールとお茶をお願い。あ、冷やしといてね。
Hontō? Tasukaru! Bīru to ocha o onegai. A, hiyashitoite ne.
(Really? That helps! Beer and tea, please. Oh, keep them cold in advance, okay?)
3. Grammar Breakdown & Audio Nuances
1. 買っとかないと (Kattokanai to)
This is a double-contraction of 買って置かなければなりません (katte okanaければ narimasen).
- 買っておく (to buy in advance) $\rightarrow$ 買っとく (kattoku)
- 買っとかない (negative plain form)
- Adding と (to) at the end of a negative verb implies "if I don't do this, it won't be good" (meaning: "I must do it").
2. 冷やしといて (Hiyashitoite)
This is the contracted request form of 冷やしておいてください (hiyashite oite kudasai - please chill this in advance).
- 冷やす (hiyasu / to cool) $\rightarrow$ 冷やしておいて $\rightarrow$ 冷やしといて.
4. Active Listening Practice Tips
- Shadowing: Listen to the dialogue and repeat what you hear immediately, mimicking the pitch accent and speed without looking at the text.
- Identify Dropped Particles: Notice how Speaker B says "飲み物、買っとかないと" instead of "飲み物を買っておかないと". In casual audio, the object particle を (o) and topic particle は (wa) are frequently omitted.
