Long-Form Sustained Reading (Main Guide)

Masterclass: N2 Long-Form Sustained Reading (長文読解)

At the JLPT N2 level, long-form reading (長文読解 - Choubun Dokkai) shifts from simple factual comprehension to analyzing abstract essays (評論), editorials (社説), and complex commentaries. To succeed, you must move beyond translating word-for-word and learn to analyze the structural architecture of Japanese prose.

This guide outlines the three core strategies required to conquer N2 long-form texts.

Strategy 1: Sentence Parsing (主語と述語の発見)

N2 sentences are notoriously long, often packed with nested relative clauses. To avoid getting lost, you must immediately locate the core subject (主語 - shugo) and the main predicate (述語 - jutsugo).

  • Rule: The main predicate almost always sits at the very end of the sentence.
  • Action: When encountering a complex sentence, mentally bracket off modifying clauses and connect the primary subject (usually marked by は or が) directly to the final verb, adjective, or noun.

Example:

現代社会において、さまざまな情報が溢れる中で、人々は自らの意志で必要な知識を選択し取る力を身につけるべきである

  • Modifier: さまざまな情報が溢れる中で (amidst overflowing information)
  • Core Skeleton: 人々は (People) ... 身につけるべきである (should acquire [the ability to...]).

Strategy 2: Conjunctions as Roadmaps (接続詞の攻略)

Conjunctions (接続詞 - setsuzokushi) are the road signs of Japanese essays. They signal transitions, logical climaxes, or shifts in perspective. Memorize these key N2 logical markers:

TypeConjunctionMeaningFunction
Contrast (逆接)しかし / ところが / 一方でHowever / On the other handSignals a shift; the author's real opinion often follows.
Cause/Effect (順接)したがって / ゆえにTherefore / ConsequentlyIntroduces a logical conclusion or result.
Rephrasing (換言)つまり / 要するにIn other words / In shortSimplifies a complex point. High-yield exam target!

Strategy 3: Spotting the Author’s Voice (筆者の主張)

The JLPT frequently asks: "What is the author's main point?" (筆者が最も言いたいことは何か). Authors rarely state their opinions aggressively. Instead, they hide their thesis at the end of paragraphs using specific grammatical structures:

  1. 〜ではないだろうか (Isn't it the case that...?)
    • Function: A polite, rhetorical way to state a strong personal opinion.
  2. 〜にほかならない (Nothing other than...)
    • Function: Used to assert a definitive conclusion.
  3. 〜と言わざるを得ない (Cannot help but say...)
    • Function: Expresses an unavoidable truth or strong conviction.

Guided Practice

Read the following passage and identify the author's primary argument.

科学技術の進歩は私たちの生活を格段に便利にした。しかし、それによって失われたものもある。何でもスマートフォンで検索できる時代だからこそ、私たちは自ら深く思考するプロセスを省略しがちである。つまり、便利すぎる社会は、人間の思考力を低下させているのではないだろうか

Breakdown & Analysis:

  1. The Pivot: The author starts with a positive statement about technology, but immediately pivots using しかし (However). The focus shifts to the negative impact.
  2. The Clarification: つまり (In other words) signals that the next sentence is the ultimate takeaway.
  3. The Thesis: The passage ends with 〜のではないだろうか. This rhetorical question is actually the author’s core belief: convenient technology is degrading human critical thinking.

Pro-Tip for Exam Day

Do not read the entire text first. Read the questions first. Identify key terms in the questions, locate those keywords in the text, and read the surrounding sentences (especially the sentence immediately before and after the keyword) to find your answer.
