Rare and Formal Kanji (Main Guide)

Masterclass: Rare & Formal Kanji (N1+)

Welcome to your advanced Japanese study guide. At the JLPT N1 level and beyond, mastering kanji is no longer just about memorizing individual characters; it is about understanding their classical roots, metaphorical extensions, and precise register.

Today, we will analyze two highly formal, evocative kanji: 醸 (じょう / かも-す) and 捗 (ちょく / はかど-る). These characters bridge the gap between everyday communication and elite literary or journalistic prose.

1. 醸 (To Brew / Engender)

  • On'yomi: ジョウ (jō)
  • Kun'yomi: かも・す (kamo-su)
  • Radical: 酉 (ひよみのとり - sake jar/alcohol radical) | Stroke Count: 20
**Structure:** 酉 (Sake jar) + 襄 (To help/raise) = 醸 (To ferment/brew)

Nuance & Usage

Historically, refers to fermenting sake or soy sauce. Metaphorically, in formal Japanese, it describes gradually bringing about or "brewing" an abstract state of mind, atmosphere, or social reaction (usually negative or tense).

Key Collocations:

  • 物議を醸す (ぶつぎをかもす): To cause a public controversy / stir.
  • 醸し出す (かもしだす): To exude or radiate (an atmosphere, elegance, or mystery).

Exemplary Sentences

  1. 彼の不用意な発言は、政界に大きな物議を醸した

    • Kare no fuyōina hatsugen wa, seikai ni ōkina butsugi o kamoshita.
    • Translation: His careless remarks stirred up major controversy in the political world.
    • Grammar Note: Notice the transitive particle . The subject directly "brews" the controversy.
  2. その古民家は、独特の情緒を醸し出している

    • Sono kominka wa, dokutoku no jōcho o kamoshidashite iru.
    • Translation: That old folk house exudes a unique, atmospheric charm.

2. 捗 (To Make Progress)

  • On'yomi: チョク (choku) / ホ (ho)
  • Kun'yomi: はかど・る (hakado-ru)
  • Radical: 扌 (てへん - hand radical) | Stroke Count: 11
**Structure:** 扌 (Hand) + 歩 (To walk/step - simplified to 捗) = To make headway by hand/effort.

Nuance & Usage

捗る is an intransitive verb meaning "to make steady, smooth progress." While used in speech, its kanji form is highly formal and frequently appears in business reports, academic updates, and classical literature.

Key Vocabulary:

  • 進捗 (しんちょく): Progress / state of play (e.g., 進捗状況 - progress report).
  • 捗る (はかどる): To make headway (synonymous with 順調に進む).

Exemplary Sentences

  1. 騒音のせいで、今日の勉強はちっとも捗らなかった

    • Sōon no sei de, kyō no benkyō wa chittomo hakadoranakatta.
    • Translation: Because of the noise, my studies didn't make any progress at all today.
    • Grammar Note: Unlike 醸す, 捗る is intransitive. It takes the subject particle (e.g., 仕事捗る).
  2. プロジェクトの進捗管理を徹底してください。

    • Purojekuto no shinchoku kanri o tettei shite kudasai.
    • Translation: Please thoroughly manage the progress of the project.
