Newspaper Editorial Reading (Main Guide)

Master Class: Deciphering Japanese Newspaper Editorials (社説) • JLPT N1

Newspaper editorials (社説 - shasetsu) represent the absolute pinnacle of formal written Japanese (論説文 - ronsakubun). For JLPT N1 candidates, mastering editorials is not just about passing the exam; it is the gateway to professional-level fluency.

Editorials are characterized by highly abstract kanji compounds (熟語 - jukugo), sophisticated rhetorical devices, and formal grammar structures that rarely appear in spoken Japanese.

1. Core Grammar Spotlight (N1)

To navigate editorials smoothly, you must instantly recognize structures that signal logical transitions, constraints, and the writer's thesis.

A. 〜を余儀なくされる (o yogi naku sareru)

  • Meaning: To be forced to do something (due to external circumstances beyond one's control).
  • Structure: Noun + を余儀なくされる / を余儀なくさせた (active form: "forced someone to...")
  • Nuance: Highly formal. Often used in political or economic contexts to describe unavoidable policy shifts.

B. 〜に照らして (ni terashite)

  • Meaning: In light of... / In view of... (comparing an action against laws, norms, history, or common sense).
  • Structure: Noun + に照らして
  • Nuance: Used when judging the validity of an action based on an established standard.

2. Sample Passage Analysis

Analyze the following excerpt concerning environmental policy and economic transition.

【読解テキスト】 (Reading Text)

急速に進む地球温暖化に対し、我が国の環境政策は抜本的な転換を余儀なくされている。国際社会の潮流に照らして、化石燃料への依存を漫然と続けることは、国際的信用の失墜を招きかねない。今こそ、再生可能エネルギーへの移行を加速させる具体策が強く求められる。

【Vocabulary & Kanji Breakdown】

  • 抜本的 (bapponteki): Radical; drastic (lit. "pulling up the root").
  • 潮流 (chōryū): Current; tide; trend of the times.
  • 漫然と (manzen to): Aimlessly; listlessly; without a clear plan.
  • 失墜 (shittsui): Fall; loss; forfeiture (of trust, authority, or prestige).
  • 〜かねない (kanenai): Might/could (lead to a negative outcome).

【Grammar & Sentence Structure Breakdown】

  1. 我が国の環境政策は抜本的な転換を余儀なくされている。
    • Analysis: The subject is "our nation's environmental policy" (我が国の環境政策). It is being forced (余儀なくされている) to undergo a "radical transformation" (抜本的な転換) due to the external pressure of global warming.
  2. 国際社会の潮流に照らして、...
    • Analysis: "In light of (に照らして) the trends of the international community (国際社会の潮流)..." This sets the standard by which Japan's actions are being judged.
  3. ...国際的信用の失墜を招きかねない。
    • Analysis: Continuing fossil fuel reliance could very well result in (招きかねない) the loss of international credibility.

3. Advanced Editorial Reading Strategies

When tackling N1-level editorials, do not read word-for-word. Instead, use these two structural strategies:

  1. Locate the "Thesis Hook" (主張のありか):
Editorials almost always conclude with the writer's recommendation or warning. Look for sentence-ending expressions in the final paragraph such as:
    • 〜べきだ (Should)
    • 〜にほかならない (Nothing other than)
    • 〜を強く望みたい (We strongly hope for...)
  2. Identify the "Concession" (譲歩 - Jōho):
Writers often acknowledge the opposing view first to strengthen their argument. Watch for:
    • 「確かに〜、しかし...」 (Tashika ni..., shikashi... / "Indeed [Option A is true], however [Option B is the real issue]...")

By mastering these structural markers, you will dramatically increase your reading speed and accuracy on the JLPT N1.
