N1 Vocabulary Master Review (Main Guide)

N1 Vocabulary Master Review: Nuance, Collocation, and Precision

Welcome to your N1 Vocabulary Master Review. At the JLPT N1 level, vocabulary acquisition shifts from memorizing simple definitions to mastering nuance (ニュアンス), register (言葉遣い), and collocation (共起表現 — how words naturally bond together).

This guide focuses on three high-yield areas crucial for acing the N1: distinguishing look-alike synonyms, mastering advanced compound verbs, and understanding formal collocations.

1. Distinguishing Synonyms (類義語の使い分け)

N1 questions frequently test your ability to choose the correct word among four options that all translate to the same English word. Let’s analyze two pairs.

Pair A: 懸念 (けねん) vs. 危惧 (きぐ)

Both mean "concern" or "fear/anxiety," but their usage contexts differ.

  • 懸念 (Kenen): Broadly used for political, economic, or business anxieties regarding an uncertain future.
    • Grammar Pattern: 〜を懸念する (Active) / 〜が懸念される (Passive)
    • Example:
      景気の減速を懸念する声が高まっている。
(Keiki no gensoku o kenen suru koe ga takamatte iru.)
Voices expressing concern over the economic slowdown are growing.
  • 危惧 (Kigu): Specifically used when there is a serious, looming danger of a bad outcome (e.g., extinction, ruin). Often used in passive form.
    • Grammar Pattern: 〜が危惧される
    • Example:
      地球温暖化により、多くの動植物の絶滅が危惧されている
(Chikyū ondanka ni yori, ōku no dōshokubutsu no zetsumetsu ga kigu sareté iru.)
Due to global warming, the extinction of many animals and plants is feared.

2. Advanced Compound Verbs (複合動詞)

Compound verbs are highly productive in N1. You must understand how the second verb modifies the first.

Pattern: Verb [Stem] + そびれる (To miss the chance to...)

This suffix indicates that you missed the perfect timing or opportunity to perform an action, resulting in regret.

  • 言いそびれる (ii-sobireru) = to miss the chance to say
  • 聞きそびれる (kiki-sobireru) = to miss the chance to ask
  • 寝そびれる (ne-sobireru) = to fail to fall asleep at the right time
[Verb Stem] + そびれる —> Expresses missed opportunity / regret
  • Example:
    彼に連絡先を聞こうと思っていたのに、すっかり聞きそびれてしまった
(Kare ni renrakusaki o kikō to omotte ita noni, sukkari kiki-sobirete shimatta.)
I intended to ask him for his contact details, but I completely missed the chance to ask.

3. High-Register Collocations (漢語の共起表現)

To score high on the N1, you must pair abstract Sino-Japanese nouns (漢語) with their correct companion verbs and particles.

NounCompanion VerbMeaningExample Collocation
把握 (haoku)する (suru)To grasp/fully understand現状を把握する (Grasp the current situation)
認識 (ninshiki)を深める (o fukameru)To deepen awareness相互理解の認識を深める (Deepen mutual awareness)
兆し (kizashi)が見えている (ga miete iru)Signs/indications are visible景気回復の兆しが見えている (Signs of economic recovery are visible)

Particle Alert: 〜に値する (ni atai suru)

Meaning "to be worthy of" or "to deserve." This is a vital N1 grammar-vocabulary hybrid.

  • Grammar Pattern: [Noun] / [Verb Dictionary Form] + に値する
  • Example:
    彼の行為は、称賛に値する
(Kare no kōi wa, shōsan ni atai suru.)
His actions are worthy of praise.
