N1 Abstract Vocabulary (Main Guide)

Master Class: JLPT N1 Abstract Vocabulary (高度な抽象語彙)

At the JLPT N1 level, the challenge shifts from physical actions and concrete objects to invisible concepts, psychological states, and societal shifts. To master N1, you must not only memorize these words but also grasp their precise nuances and collocations.

Today, we will dissect three essential categories of N1 abstract vocabulary: The Homophone Trap, Internal Conflicts, and Conceptual Gaps.

1. The Homophone Trap: 収束 vs. 終息 (しゅうそく)

In speech, these words sound identical (shūsoku), but in writing and nuance, they describe completely different states of "ending."

KanjiCore MeaningNuanceCommon Collocations
収束Convergence / Settling downChaos or active variables are being bundled (束) and brought under control.混乱が収束する (The chaos settles)
事態が収束に向かう (The situation heads toward resolution)
終息Complete cessation / ExtinctionA negative phenomenon has completely ended/stopped breathing (息).感染症が終息する (The epidemic is completely wiped out)
戦争の終息 (The end of the war)

Stroke & Kanji Breakdown:

 • (To gather/obtain) + (Bundle): Think of gathering loose threads into a neat bundle.
 • (End) + (Breath): Think of a beast drawing its final breath.

2. High-Frequency Abstract Trio

These three verbs/nouns are indispensable for the N1 Reading section and academic writing.

① 葛藤 (かっとう) — Internal Conflict / Dilemma

 • Etymology: Literally written with the kanji for "arrowroot" (葛) and "wisteria" (藤). These two climbing vines tangle together inextricably, representing a mind tangled in conflict.
 • Collocation: 〜の間で葛藤する (To struggle between X and Y) / 葛藤を抱える (To harbor internal conflict).

例文 (Example):
彼は親の期待に応えるべきか、自分の夢を追うべきかで葛藤している。
He is torn between meeting his parents' expectations and pursuing his own dreams.

② 乖離 (かいり) — Divergence / Estrangement / Gap

 • Nuance: A severe, often problematic disconnect between two things that should ideally align (e.g., theory vs. practice, public opinion vs. government policy).
 • Collocation: 〜と〜の乖離 (The gap between X and Y) / 現実から乖離する (To be divorced from reality).

例文 (Example):
提示された統計データは、我々の肌感覚と著しく乖離している。
The presented statistical data diverges significantly from our actual, everyday experience.

③ 示唆 (しさ) — Suggestion / Implication / Hint

 • Nuance: Indirectly pointing towards a conclusion without stating it outright. Highly common in research papers.
 • Collocation: 〜を示唆する (To suggest/imply X) / 示唆に富む話 (A thought-provoking/suggestive talk).

例文 (Example):
最新の研究結果は、この遺伝子が寿命に影響を与えている可能性を示唆している。
The latest research results suggest the possibility that this gene influences lifespan.

3. Advanced Collocation Challenge

In N1, vocabulary is tested through usage. Translate and analyze the following sentence to see how these abstract terms interact with N1 grammar:

理想と現実の乖離葛藤しつつも、彼は新たな道を模索し続けた。
While struggling with the gap between his ideals and reality, he continued to grope for a new path.

 • Grammar Note: 〜つつも (N2/N1: "Even while doing...") perfectly bridges the psychological state of 葛藤 with the active verb 模索する (to grope/search in the dark).

Quick Review Quiz

Choose the correct word to fill in the blank:

 1. インフレがようやく( 収束 ・ 終息 )し、経済が安定してきた。
 2. 彼の発言は、辞任の意向を( 乖離 ・ 示唆 )するものだった。

Answers:

 1. 収束 (Inflation doesn't disappear completely to zero; it settles into a stable, controlled state).
 2. 示唆 (His statement implied his intention to resign).
