Building Formal Arguments (Main Guide)

Mastering the Art of Logical Persuasion: Building Formal Arguments (N1)

To pass the JLPT N1 or excel in academic and professional Japanese (論文 - essays, 討論 - debates), you must move beyond simple opinion-sharing. You need to construct airtight, sophisticated arguments.

This guide focuses on three high-level N1 grammatical structures essential for asserting premises, conceding points, and delivering inevitable conclusions.

1. Asserting the Ultimate Cause: 〜にほかならない

To build a compelling argument, you must pinpoint the exact cause of a phenomenon, brushing aside all other possibilities.

  • Grammar Pattern:
    $$\text{Noun} + \text{にほかならない}$$
    $$\text{Verb-Plain (or から)} + \text{にほかならない}$$
  • Meaning: "Is nothing other than...", "Precisely because of..."
  • Nuance: A highly formal, decisive written expression (書き言葉) that rejects any other explanation.

Example in Argumentation:

我々のプロジェクトが成功を収めたのは、徹底した市場調査と、チーム全員の迅速な意思決定の賜物にほかならない
(Our project's success is nothing other than the fruit of thorough market research and rapid decision-making by the entire team.)

2. Introducing Critical Evaluation: 〜極まりない / いささか〜

When dismantling an opponent's argument, you must maintain a refined, objective tone while expressing strong disagreement.

A. 〜極まりない (きわまりない)

  • Grammar Pattern: $\text{Na-Adjective (no だ)} / \text{Noun} + \text{極まりない}$
  • Meaning: "Extremely...", "Utterly..." (Often used with negative-connotation words like 遺憾 - regrettable, 不条理 - absurd).

B. いささか〜 (Adverb)

  • Meaning: "Somewhat", "A little bit" (Used to soften a critique while maintaining intellectual sharpness).

Example in Argumentation:

十分な議論を経ずにこの法案を可決することは、拙速極まりない決定であり、いささか論理性に欠けると言わざるを得ない。
(Passing this bill without sufficient debate is an extremely hasty decision, and I must say it is somewhat lacking in logic.)

3. Declaring Inevitable Outcomes: 〜を余儀なくされる (をよぎなくされる)

A powerful argument often relies on showing that a certain course of action is not just a choice, but an unavoidable reality forced by external circumstances.

  • Grammar Pattern:
    $$\text{Noun} + \text{を余儀なくされる} \quad (\text{Active: } \text{Noun} + \text{を余儀なくさせる})$$
  • Meaning: "To be forced to do [something]"
  • Nuance: Implies that due to external pressure or logical necessity, there is absolutely no other option.

Example in Argumentation:

少子高齢化が加速する中、現行の社会保障制度は抜本的な見直しを余儀なくされている
(With the accelerating decline in birthrate and aging population, the current social security system is forced to undergo a drastic revision.)

Putting It Together: The Argumentative Flow

To structure a formal N1-level argument (the PREP method), chain these structures logically:

  1. State the Thesis:
    現代の環境問題の解決には、個人の意識改革のみならず、企業の抜本的な技術革新が不可欠であることは言を俟たない(げんをまたない - goes without saying)。
  2. Highlight the Inevitability:
    化石燃料に依存し続ければ、将来的な資源枯渇に伴う経済活動の縮小を余儀なくされるだろう。
  3. Refute Counterarguments:
    コスト面のみを理由に技術革新を先送りすることは、短期的視野に基づいた愚策極まりない
  4. Conclude:
    持続可能な社会の実現こそが、我々に課された最優先課題にほかならないのである。
